Will converting PNG to JPG reduce quality?
JPG is lossy, so there is a small quality trade for a much smaller file. For photos it is imperceptible; for sharp text or logos, PNG stays crisper.
What happens to a transparent background?
It becomes white, because JPG has no transparency channel. If you need transparency preserved, convert to WebP instead.

Why convert PNG to JPG?

Understanding the two formats
PNG — PNG. PNG is a lossless format, meaning it reproduces every pixel exactly with no compression artefacts. That makes it the right choice for screenshots, logos, icons, diagrams and anything with crisp edges or flat colour, and it fully supports transparency. The trade-off is size: a photograph saved as PNG can be several times larger than the same image as JPG, so PNG is not suited to camera photos you need to keep small.
JPG — JPEG. JPEG is the universal photo format — nearly 30 years old and readable by every device, browser and app on earth. It uses lossy compression that is superb for photographs, keeping files small while looking clean, which is why cameras and phones default to it. Its weaknesses are that it cannot store transparency and it adds visible halos around sharp text and hard edges, so it is a poor choice for logos, screenshots and line art.
