Understanding the two formats
HEIC — HEIC. HEIC is the high-efficiency format Apple adopted in 2017; it is what iPhones save by default. It stores a photo at roughly half the size of an equivalent JPG at similar quality and can hold extras like depth data. The catch is compatibility: no mainstream browser can display HEIC, and many websites, forms and Windows apps reject it — which is why iPhone users so often need to convert it.
WEBP — WebP. WebP is a modern format from Google that supports both lossy and lossless modes, transparency and even animation. At comparable quality it is typically 25–35% smaller than JPG and much smaller than PNG, which is why it is now the default for fast-loading websites. Every current browser displays it, though some older desktop apps and upload forms still do not accept it.
