Understanding the two formats
GIF — GIF. GIF is an old format limited to 256 colours per frame, which makes it poor for photographs but historically popular for simple animations. PNG — PNG. PNG is a lossless format, meaning it reproduces every pixel exactly with no compression artefacts. The trade-off is size: a photograph saved as PNG can be several times larger than the same image as JPG, so PNG is not suited to camera photos you need to keep small.
