Frequently asked questions
How much smaller is WebP than BMP?
Often 90% or more, since BMP stores every pixel uncompressed.
Do I lose quality?
A little, in exchange for a much smaller file; use PNG if you need lossless.
Do I need to install anything?
No software and no sign-up. The BMP-to-WEBP converter runs in your web browser, so it works on any device — Windows, Mac, Android or iPhone — straight from this page.
Can I convert more than one file at once?
Yes. Drop in several images and they are converted together; a single file downloads directly, while a batch arrives as a ZIP.
Is anything uploaded?
No. Conversion happens entirely in your browser — your images never leave your device.
Why convert BMP to WEBP?
Convert bulky, uncompressed BMP files to compact WebP for the web or for sharing.
Understanding the two formats
BMP — BMP. BMP is an old Windows bitmap format that stores images completely uncompressed. That means perfect quality but enormous files — often five to ten times larger than an equivalent JPG or PNG. BMP is rarely used on the modern web, so converting to a compressed format dramatically cuts the size with little or no visible loss.
WEBP — WebP. WebP is a modern format from Google that supports both lossy and lossless modes, transparency and even animation. At comparable quality it is typically 25–35% smaller than JPG and much smaller than PNG, which is why it is now the default for fast-loading websites. Every current browser displays it, though some older desktop apps and upload forms still do not accept it.
What to expect from the conversion
WebP dramatically reduces size compared with an uncompressed BMP.
How to convert BMP to WEBP
Drop your BMP file into the box above (or click to browse and select it), and the tool converts it to WEBP right away. The WEBP output is already selected for you, so you can simply download the result. Everything happens on your own device — nothing is uploaded, which means even private or sensitive images stay entirely with you.
Need a different conversion, or want to process a batch? The full image converter handles JPG, PNG and WebP together, and you can pair it with the compressor if the result also needs to hit a size limit.
